General Description

Under general supervision, performs responsible supervision and protective service work ensuring a safe environment for members and their guests, aids troubled bathers in emergencies, and enforces all rules and regulations.  

Primary Duties

These job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed.  Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as deemed necessary.

  • Responds to emergencies according to safety policy and procedures
  • Applies resuscitation and administers medical aid in the treatment of minor accidents when necessary
  • Completes all paperwork and documentation including incident reports
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in the area when able to do so without distraction from lifesaving
  • Maintains the health and safety of all users of the facilities and all employees
  • Enforces rules, regulations, and policies to all guests, groups, and organizations
  • Inspects the pool and surrounding areas, reporting conditions or practices that may pose a threat to health and/or safety to the Facility Manager
  • Performs regular maintenance duties to sustain a safe environment
  • Monitors water conditions and temperatures, and keeps accurate maintenance charts as required
  • Provides customer service and responds to questions from guests, groups, and organizations
  • Follows daily schedules and assigned rotations
  • Wears uniform, swimsuit, rescue tube, whistle, hip pack and shirt (as necessary)

Special Requirements:

Must have the ability to work weekdays, holidays, and/or weekends as required by aquatic program needs. Working hours may vary from week to week.

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License (Class E)
  • One year of lifeguard experience preferred
  • Current Certified American Red Cross, YMCA, BSA, Lifeguard and First Aid Training or comparable/higher level
  • Current ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification or American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider or National Safety Council or comparable higher level.

Essential Physical Functions

Continual light work and the ability to make a water rescue as needed. Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending, good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination, good eyesight, hearing, and speech.  Able to lift up to 45 lbs.

Environmental Conditions

Works outside in an environmentally uncontrolled space most of the time and will also work in possibly adverse environmental conditions (e.g., sun, heat, cold, wind and rain) for periods of time as well as chemical products. It is essential that the Lifeguard Position is alert to safety hazards within their area of services.
