Job Title:               Accounting Specialist

Department:        Finance

Reports to:            Vice President of Finance

OVERVIEW/POSITION PURPOSE: 

Performs a variety of accounting tasks and data entry functions to help ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.  Specifically, the position is responsible for the timely and accurate recording and reconciliation of revenues cash receipts, and other general accounting entries. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Day to Day Financial

  • Records cash, check and credit card receipts into the donor database system; reporting as necessary
  • Transfers data from the donor management system to the accounting system
  • Reconciles credit card payments (merchant services) with the donor database
  • Coordinates the multiple applications of record donations and retrieves donor information
  • Investigates and resolves inquiries related to accounts receivables from Wish Granting Organizations (WGOs)
  • Calculates cost of goods sold on merchandise sales by generating and reviewing merchandising system reports
  • Perform mass data updates using data loader tools

Monthly Closings

  • Assists in monthly closings of financial records including account reconciliations, analysis, spreadsheets, journal entries and reports
  • Calculates and promptly remits sales tax on applicable sales transactions

Additional Duties

  • Assist in creation and modification of online fundraising tools
  • All other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS BEYOND NORMAL OFFICE ENVIRONMENT:

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, bend, crouch, balance, use hands and arms
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. unaided
  • Ability to work for extended periods in an office environment
  • Flexible schedule to include rotating schedules, nights, weekends and/or extended hours of work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Working knowledge of accounting and business practices
  • Effective computer skills to perform accounting tasks
  • Experience working with large databases including data mining and data manipulation in Excel (Pivot Tables, filtering, v-look ups, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Outlook
  • Displays attention to detail and accurately performs accounting tasks
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Highly developed customer services skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to speak, read and write English to communicate with donors and vendors
  • Associate's Degree or higher with a focus in Accounting or equivalent work experience; Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Two to four years of related business experience
