Overview

From what was once a handful of cells, the Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) has become one of the largest county detention facilities in the nation. Situated on a 76-acre secure compound in Orlando, Florida, OCCD has the capacity to detain up to 4,100 inmates on any given day. Strong working relationships between the 1,700 certified and civilian staff are valued at OCCD, as is the rich history and proud tradition passed down through the many generations of employees.

The psychiatrist is responsible for providing quality care to the inmates at the Orange County Jail who are under the care of mental health services. This position will also provide oversight (in conjunction with the medical providers) of mental health inmates who may display medical problems causing or contributing to mental health symptoms. Work is performed with independence under the general supervision of the Medical Director and the Healthcare Administrator.

Representative Duties    

  • Performs psychiatric assessments, evaluations and treatments.
  • Conducts daily psychiatric sick call.
  • Orders, reviews, and responds to all lab work and testing associated with psychotropic medication administration.
  • Monitors and effectively treats side effect issues related to psychotropic medication.
  • Assist in identifying and responding appropriately to inmate problems related to alcohol/drug abuse or withdrawal/dependence.
  • Provides educational presentations to Corrections Health Services staff regarding psychotropic medications, and other related areas.
  • Assists in the division's effort to ensure that all aspects of the mental health delivery system are consistent with ACA, NCCHC, FMJS and other applicable standards.
  • Assists with the division's effort to provide quality psychiatric care in a cost-effective manner consistent with budgetary and logistical considerations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a school of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Must possess a current license to practice medicine in the State of Florida and completed residency training in Psychiatry from an approved training program through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
  • Currently Board Certified in Psychiatry through an ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) approved Board, or must be eligible to sit for the Boards. Board Certification must be obtained within 5 years of completion of residency.

Educational Requirements
