WORK OBJECTIVE
To provide quality aquatic opportunities and programs for patrons in a safe and enjoyable environment. Emphasis on safety, accident prevention and responding to emergency situations. Additional responsibilities include coordinating staff coverage, customer service, daily and weekly equipment inspections and collection of admission fees. This position reports to the Recreation Division Manager and may also take direction from Recreation Supervisors and/or the Recreation Specialists.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs Red Cross protocols, audits, and safety evaluations as required by training program.
- Performs Rescues, CPR, First Aid, and use of AED as necessary.
- Collects daily revenue and submits fees to the Parks and Recreation Department office.
- Responsible for completing oxygen log sheet, AED log sheet, and pool chemical log each day upon opening with documentation.
- Completes necessary VAT testing and zone validation tests consistently with documentation.
- Responsible for completing and documenting all accidents, chemical reports, lifeguard rescue reports, incident reports, and emergency pool closure reports/downtime as needed.
- Provides information to the general public and patrons in a professional and courteous manner.
- Keeps pool deck, bath houses, and general pool area clear of debris and in working order at all times.
- Inspects safety and operational equipment and reports any deficiencies to the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Manager or Recreation Specialist.
- Assists lifeguards and instructors with performing swimming test skills and provide safety information to all participants.
- Assists in maintaining staff daily schedules and resolving conflict.
- Assists with special events, daily programs, and activities as needed.
- Participates in leading weekly/monthly in-service lifeguard trainings.
- Performs pool vacuuming and/or additional pool maintenance as assigned or needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Required to possess and maintain a current Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (training provided).
- Required to complete a minimum of 4 hours of in-service training per month. Participation in training is an essential responsibility of every lifeguard.
- Must be at least 17 years of age.
- Experience in supervising recreational programs and aquatic facilities is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of pool rules, safety equipment and rescue techniques.
- Ability to recognize and respond to lightning and environmental threats.
- Ability to effectively maintain crowd control and program activity in a safe and professional manner.
- Ability to perform friendly and effective customer service pertaining to the pool rules, program activities, and operational functions.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to swim 300 yards, without resting, using front crawl or breaststroke.
- Treads water using legs only for two minutes.
- Performs a timed ten pound brick test from at least 8 1/2 feet of water, swims 25 yards with brick, and exits water without assistance within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Performs a timed rapid extrication skills assessment within 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- Tasks involve some combination of reaching, bending, kneeling, carrying, pushing, pulling and lifting (20-50 lbs.)
- Prolonged exposure to heat, high humidity, sun, rain and inclement weather.
