The incumbent in this position is responsible for the protection of life, property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment; involves an element of personal danger; and entails frequent contact with the public under routine and emergency conditions. The incumbent is required to engage in the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators, observed or when assistance is requested from dispatch or other deputy sheriffs. #oj
- Must be Florida Certified or Currently Attending a Florida Law Enforcement Officer Academy:
- Florida Certified (vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests): Must have successfully completed the Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification or Equivalency of Training from a Florida law enforcement academy and a passing score on the Florida law enforcement officer certification exam.
- Currently Attending an Academy: Must be currently attending a Florida law enforcement officer academy. Must obtain passing score on the state law enforcement officer certification exam prior to receiving a conditional offer.
- Good verifiable work history.
- Accredited high school or GED diploma. (Will not accept a certificate of completion.)
- Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
- At least 20 years of age.
- U.S. Citizen.
- Valid driver's license for the last year.
- Must have a valid Florida driver's license prior to being hired.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.
- Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces.
- No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

- Ability to provide police omnipresence through routine patrol. Check buildings to verify and confirm security of the structure. Conduct residential and business security surveys and provides security tips.
- Ability to drive a motor vehicle and/or walk within residential or business areas to conduct routine patrol, surveillance, and investigative functions. Maintain constant engagement with the police radio for all transmissions to remain aware of pertinent activities. Back up other law enforcement officers (OCSO or other agencies) and request backup assistance as necessary. Communicate with dispatchers regularly by phone, computer/MDT or radio. Respond to calls for assistance and/or to determine if a crime has occurred. Investigate violations of Florida State Statutes, County Ordinances, and civil/criminal traffic infractions. May investigate violations of Federal Statutes. Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and victims. Arrest, search, and transport violators and/or prisoners. Communicate with supervisor per unit protocol. Conduct searches outdoors (i.e., cars, houses, buildings, etc.). Protect, secure, and process crime scenes. Establish a perimeter to contain a suspect when necessary. Evaluate tactical needs on every call for service. Recover stolen property. Perform field sobriety tests. Conduct felony stops. Assist other units with special details as necessary. Conduct post-crime follow-up investigations (i.e., shows mug shots, conducts lineups, checks records, gathers intelligence). Hand delivers and serves warrants.
- Perform routine traffic stops and directs traffic when necessary. Intervene in domestic disputes. Respond to non-law enforcement related calls for service/assistance. Counsel parties involved in crisis. Investigate missing person's cases. Assist other agencies with their respective functions as necessary. Communicate important information to concerned citizens. Initiate Baker Act procedures, which may require physically restraining and taking qualifying persons into custody. Transport persons to various facilities. Hand delivers civil papers.
- Complete any necessary paperwork to include incident reports, Field Interview Reports, arrest affidavits, traffic citations, monthly statistics, administrative paperwork, and alarm notifications. Work with sensitive information and must maintain confidentiality at all times. Ability to operate a computer/MDT for purposes such as word processing, accessing databases, and maintaining electronic files.
- Initiate citizen contacts for various purposes. Assist motorists and pedestrians in need of assistance. Refer the public to the appropriate agencies or services as necessary. Participate in special events and programs, including but not limited to, Neighborhood Watch and other community policing or law enforcement training or awareness programs.
- Review reports and/or depositions in preparation for subpoenas or hearings/court appearances. Communicate with the Assistant State Attorney regarding the case as necessary. Truthfully testifies at depositions, hearings, and/or other legal or court proceedings.
- Must keep current in all required certifications and trainings, including but not limited to, firearms, first aid/CPR, Law Enforcement Vehicle Operations training, physical exams, and courses required by FDLE. Stay abreast of changes to agency policies/procedures, State Statutes, or other applicable laws or ordinances. Maintain the required physical fitness level.
- Incumbents are required to maintain weapons, uniforms, and all other issued equipment according to policy; adhere to the vehicle maintenance schedule; and participate in required equipment inventories. The following list includes standard equipment required for use while on the job; more and/or different equipment may be involved depending on assignment or circumstances. Police radio, computers/MDT, vehicle, telephone, ASP baton, handgun, shotgun, chemical agents, ECD (i.e. taser), gas mask/respirator, PPE gear, riot helmet, first aid and CPR kit, fingerprint kit, fire extinguisher, leather gear, body armor, vest, flashlight, handcuffs, uniform and related clothing, and body worn camera.

Training:
Newly hired certified deputy sheriffs (with or without law enforcement officer experience) must participate in Deputy Orientation. This 4-week program covers all high liability areas, including driving, shooting, defensive tactics, and agency policies and procedures. After successfully completing Deputy Orientation, new deputies complete 14 weeks in the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP). This one-on-one training with a certified Field Training Officer ensures that all new deputies are fully prepared to be a solo deputy. New hires with prior law enforcement experience may be eligible for an accelerated Field Training and Evaluation Program, but still must complete the 4-week Deputy Orientation. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Demands:
- Cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot through various terrains (i.e. up/down stairs, around buildings, on city streets, through or in between natural barriers such as water, trees, bushes, etc., or a combination of these, etc.)
- Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations including physical fighting with subjects and/or re-directing them to the ground.
- Must be able to physically secure a resisting subject with the appropriate restraints after a physical confrontation.
- Visual depth, distance, and color perception, night and peripheral vision.
- Must be able to meet the agency's hearing standard established by the agency's Occupational Medical Physicians.
- Must meet visual requirements of at least correctable to 20/40 in each eye.
- Must be able to use both hands simultaneously and have manual and finger dexterity.
- Flexibility of upper body and limbs and ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Strength in upper and lower body, legs, back, arms, and hands.
- Must be able to wear a utility equipment belt capable of carrying multiple pieces of required equipment for extended periods of time (on average, weighing approximately 20 pounds).

- Physical speed; quick reflexes; balance/equilibrium; able to stand for long periods of time.

Work Environment:

Various terrains may be encountered including high grass, woods, ditches, muck, sand, and small hills, as well as water sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams. Depending on assignment the employee may be required to work evening, midnight and/or weekend shifts. Shift times may vary.
